Commercial Insurance

If you own or manage a business you spend a lot of time and energy keeping that business going and growing. What you should also think about are the potential risks that could threaten that business and how to limit and manage those risks through insurance.

All businesses should have insurance. That need varies on the potential exposure the business owner faces. Depending on what the business does the insurance and its cost for a business operating out of someone’s home can vary greatly from a large business with multiple locations, many employees and a fleet of vehicles.

To protect themselves businesses should obtain the following types of insurance:

Property Insurance

Property insurance will compensate your business if the property you use is destroyed or damaged by perils such as fire or severe weather. It covers not just the building or structure but the business personal property inside.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance protects your business in the event that someone claims that your business and/or your employees caused harm exposing you to potential legal liability. Liability insurance pays damages related to parties’ injuries (including medical bills) and/or property damage for which your business is legally liable, up to the policy limits. It also covers defense costs and legal fees.

Business Vehicle Insurance

Business vehicle insurance gives you coverage for vehicles owned by a business. It pays the claims of third parties due to bodily injury or property damage for which your business is legally liable, up to the policy limits. This coverage can also pay to repair or replace your vehicles because of damage resulting from accidents, theft, flooding and other events.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance

If you have employees you need workers’ compensation insurance. New Jersey law requires that all of the state’s employers, not covered by Federal programs or those that are approved for self-insurance, have workers’ compensation coverage. New Jersey law states that failing to insure, if determined to be willful, is a crime of the fourth degree.  Penalties for this failure can go up to $5,000 for the first ten days and up to $5,000 for each additional ten-day period afterwards.  Workers compensation insurance pays for medical care and replaces a percentage of lost wages for an employee injured in the course of employment, no matter of who was at fault for the injury.

There is a wide variety of policies above and beyond basic coverage that can be tailored to your business’ needs, including:

Business Catastrophe Liability

Business catastrophe liability or an umbrella policy can give your business coverage over and above your other liability coverage.

Specialized Liability

Specialized liability insurance policies can meet specific needs of businesses. They include Errors and Omissions Insurance (E&O)/Professional Liability Insurance (which could cover legal claims over harm done due to mistakes by the business), Employment Practices Liability Insurance (which may cover legal claims by job applicants, employees or ex-employees) and Directors and Officers Liability Insurance (D&O) (which could cover legal claims against directors and officers due to the decisions they made).

Terrorism Insurance

Terrorism insurance is available to owners of commercial property as mandated by the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act which was created in 2002. Losses caused by terrorist acts under these policies are covered by private insurers and reinsured by the federal government.
